This Music Together® class is one that a child can attend from birth through age five, exploring all nine Music Together song collections. These classes follow the recommendations of child development researchers -- grouping children of a variety of ages as this fosters natural, family-style learning. Younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones; older children learn by leading younger ones -- and adults are happy because the children in their family can go to class together. Each child participates at his or her own level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, watching, and exploring musical instruments. Any caregivers -- parents, grandparents, aunt, uncle, nanny -- can bring the children. The whole family is welcome for this important family music experience!
Babies are always welcome in the mixed-age class or if they are 8 months or younger they can take the special “Babies Class”. Every child’s development benefits from early exposure to music and movement and this class is a one-semester introduction to Music Together.
Music Together's one-semester Babies Class is for families with infants from birth through eight months of age. In this class, the activities are specifically designed to teach you how to support music development in infancy and how to connect with your baby through music using methods such as "purposeful touch," "sound-layering," "dancing for baby," etc. The activities and songbook are specifically designed for babies and aim to give the parents as much information and support as possible so that they can learn about their baby’s musical development. It’s a great opportunity to meet with other parents of newborns while learning many activities you can enjoy at home with your baby. And since our Babies Class uses the same song collections as our other classes, you will experience a seamless transition as your baby grows into our mixed-age class experience.
Our Generations class follows the same philosophy and curriculum as our mixed-age class, but with the added element of a circle of elders joining in on the fun! This is a very special offering that allows families to interact and bond with the senior residents at the Villages of Sandalwood Park who sit in a larger circle around us and actively participate in the class. Our classes are a highlight of the residents' week and the children get a true "family-class" experience! Please feel free to speak to our Director, Sarah Kilts: 647-888-6568 if you have any questions.
Rhythm Kids for Ages 5-8
Rhythm Kids is an exciting music, movement, and drumming class for children ages 5 through 8. Children integrate and assimilate rhythm into their lives, as they learn multicultural drumming patterns, develop new repertoire on various percussion instruments, explore movement and dance while singing songs, play games based on music and drumming, and have fun with a host of rhythm activities.
Rhythm Kids follows through on the Music Together® vision to help children complete the pathway of early childhood music development from birth through age 8. As part of the Rhythm Kids experience, children and their grownups can enjoy drumming play and practice sessions at home with the help of online play-along videos featuring Rhythm Kids creator Tom Foote. Classes are for children SK–Grade 2 (ages 5 through 8) and include: 10 weekly, 45-minute classes, and Animal Collection Songbook and CDs (2 copies) each semester and access to online video tutorials and play-alongs. Children will learn, create, discover and explore music, movement and drumming. They will enjoy age-appropriate ways to play rhythm instruments (shakers, tambourines, etc.) as we explore traditional drumming patterns through animal names and movements. Students will experience drumming, song, and dance from around the world (Mali, Puerto Rico, Turkey, etc.) and find new ways to connect mind, body, and voice through rhythm. This class will help children develop skill in improvising, soloing, conducting, composition, and improvisation. The curriculum utilizes active musical games that are both enriching and totally fun! This is an instrument-learning class, so your child will need a drum. We recommend djembe hand drums that are large enough for your child to sit on when the drums are placed on their side (7-8” diameter head). If you do not have a djembe, we can sell a high quality one to you at a very reasonable price (inquire for details: Mapleleafmusictogether@gmail.com).
